Yes...No...Maybe...

Indecisiveness

We want to give an answer. Yes? No? Maybe?

It would seem so easy. Just decide and answer. But alas, it is not so easy.

The “Yes/No” decision has many factors associated with it: personal preference, desire, moral codes, social norms, fear of others, etc.

And yet dozens of times each day, we must decide and issue a verdict. Yes. No.

Integrity

Integrity is that quality of consistency in us. We are the same through and through. Our thoughts match our actions match our words.

Jesus encouraged us to be people of integrity. He told us that we should not “swear on” things in heaven or earth as a way to validate our answers. Our integrity should be sufficient when we answer “Yes” or “No”.

Matthew 5:34-37

But I say to you, do not swear at all: neither by heaven, for it is God’s throne; nor by the earth, for it is His footstool; nor by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.

Nor shall you swear by your head, because you cannot make one hair white or black.

But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’ For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.

But to be true to this principle, we must say “Yes” when we agree and we must say “No” when we disagree.

Mean it when you say it.

So, perhaps we should think a bit more carefully before we answer.

Think a bit longer. Take more time to decide.

Be sure that our Yes and No are true.
