Is it me?

Mark 14:17-19

In the evening He came with the twelve. Now as they sat and ate, Jesus said, “Assuredly, I say to you, one of you who eats with Me will betray Me.”

And they began to be sorrowful, and to say to Him one by one, “Is it I?” And another said, “Is it I?”

Attitude

The attitude expressed herein and the importance to the Christian. Self-reflection. Considering the log in my eye before the splinter in my brother’s eye.

When I hear and am confronted by the Word of the LORD, do I look at “I” first? Am I quick to blame another? Quick to shovel off some truth or some rebuke to my neighbor?

Luke 8:18

“Therefore take heed how you hear. For whoever has, to him more will be given; and whoever does not have, even what he seems to have will be taken from him.”

Take heed

Careful how you hear. That is the Master’s warning. How you hear affects whether or not you gain. Desire to gain and grow. Let your hearing be good hearing, effective hearing.

Let your ears be the first to suggest, “Is it I?”. Hear with openness and willingness.

Ways to hear

A list to consider. Ways to hear.

  • Am I listening and hearing, or just listening?

  • Do I hear what is said, or listening for what is not said?

  • Do I listen defensively or judgmentally?

  • Am I Open?

  • Am I listening actively?

  • Whilst listening, am I distracted by electronic devices or am I giving the conversation my full attention?

To the wise

Seek learning. Seek knowledge. Seek understanding.

Gain it by hearing well.

Is it I?
